Footprints in the Sand

One night I had a dream. I dreamed that I was walking along the beach with God, while scenes from my life unfolded across the sky.

After each scene had passed, I looked back and saw two sets of footprints in the sand: one belonged to me, and the other to God.

When the final scene of my life had passed before us, I looked back at the footprints in the sand. I noticed that many times along the path of my life, there was only one set of footprints. I also realised that these were the most difficult and frightening moments of my life.

This troubled me deeply, and I asked God:

“Lord, You told me that once I had decided to follow You, You would always be with me, wherever my path might lead. Yet I noticed that during the darkest and most turbulent times of my life, there was only one set of footprints in the sand.

I do not understand why, at the very times when I needed You most, You left me alone.”

God replied:

“My beloved child, I never left you in your hours of trial and suffering. When you saw only one set of footprints in the sand, they were Mine.

For it was in those very moments that I lifted you into My arms and carried you.”
